8/9” Mixed media on paper

I just love putting things together that don’t typically go together. Clothes, colors, ingredients, people, you get it. This also includes art mediums.

A very successful artist once told me that you can NEVER apply acrylic over oil paints; naturally, I’ve been doing it ever since! Granted, they don’t blend together, but I like the contrast, the resistance; it says something.

In this painting, I’ve layered acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and oil pastels. I think they all play nicely together!😊

  1. Agreed, all those mediums together show texture.

    I like it Tiffany!

I was told by an artist that we can’t paint acrylic over oils.

So to experiment I painted acrylic over 2 or 3 oils paintings. Well, it worked and I was able to create a new painting in acrylics.

  2. You are such a rebel, which I love in your work. I have always enjoyed your mixed style of your work. Perhaps that is why I am always anxious to see what you do next. I haven’t seen you use a fabric piece lately but I love it when you integrate small pictures as well, especially of flowers, butterflies or other things. I think that is part of your talent. When I look at this one I see a fossil in limestone where a bit of water is causing the fossil to decay. Love the piece and don’t ever stop breaking the rules. How can true creativity come with rules. Keep your rebellious side rocking Tiffany! Love you!

    1. There is a time and place for rebellion, and it most definitely belongs in art making! Thank you so much for your continued support of my artwork Joni, you really understand me and where I come from, and that gives me encouragement! ❤ 🤗

  3. This is fabulous. Mixing things up is a wonderful trait, conventionalism is boring and uninspired. Contrast is creative and creative is inspiring and inspiring is the purpose of art.

There are no rules in art.

As soon as you add rules it becomes product or content, not art.

Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, who have been known to break some rules themselves, once wrote:

And if you’re trying to paint a picture
But you’re not sure which colors belong
    Just paint what you see
Don’t let anyone say it’s wrong.

I think you just inspired a blog post!!

      1. It’s a great line in a great song from a great album by a great band! So freeing and empowering and inspiring. I wish I felt that brave more often.

I also love this one from the same song – it’s just so perfect:

And if the whole world’s singing your songs
And all of your paintings have been hung
        Just remember what was yours
        Is everyone’s from now on

I have been a huge fan since AM but I think Sky Blue Sky is probably my favorite of theirs!
