Damaged Goods

16″ x 20″ Mixed media on canvas

It might be hard to see, but if you look at the top left corner of the painting, you can see the tear in the canvas. That’s the way it arrived in my Blick order, damaged goods.

I could have thrown it out and demanded a refund, but that’s not my style, I use, reuse and recycle everything. So I painted on it anyway.

Then, I highlighted the flaw by using my very rusty sewing skills, rough stitching in a dramatic fashion, and you know what? It was really fun! I want to do more stitching on canvas, maybe like embroider something, all of the possibilities have me feeling kinda giddy!

I’m now completely out of new canvases. I’m okay with that, there are piles of not finished paintings I can pick through and play, surely I will have something new and fabulous to share soon! Stay creative my friends!😉🎨

I love how you encorporate minuses into plusses! I find in making my Angel Tears that there are some rhinestones with minute chips or scratches in them. Instead of throwing them away I polish them as much as I can and still use them. I say all are homemade and even angels leave their marks!

The painting looks like the remnants of a fly after being hit with a swatter

A painting/construction by Marcel Duchamp was badly damaged many years ago when it was installed in Philadelphia Museum Of Art. Duchamp decided that he liked it in its damaged state, so it has been left that way.

It’s a bit punk, in a mangled way, I’m sure you would agree!

I love your stitching, a very creative solution. It fits naturally in with your other ways of reusing. I thought of an old worn-out ragdoll when I saw it. Mended several times, but loved so much.

Thanks! I got that too! I had a classic Raggedy Ann doll as a child, probably because my middle name is Ann, someone gave it to me, the only doll I remember having!

This is beautiful and the stitching just makes it even more interesting. I love it when you add texture to your work Tiffany. You use something that looks like netting I am not sure what it is but I love that too. Your work is something else!!! Love you Joni ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you, sweetheart!!! Yes, I have used everything from netting, fishnet stockings, fabric, lace, and all kinds of other objects in my art! I think it’s important to reuse everything as much as possible, plus, it adds whimsy and interest to the piece! 😉🥰🙏💕

Thank you, Robin!!! It was really kinda cool to stitch on canvas, certainly not going to hold it together forever, but it was fun to try something new!
