Discrimination hit me hard when I applied for a basic position at Target last week. It was kind of a last resort, but it’s close to home, and I thought it was a sure thing, until they followed up and asked me three voluntary questions: Am I white or Hispanic, am I male or female, and finally, am I over 40 years old? The next day I got the email that they have no positions for me. (They still have 2 positions advertised)
Needless to say, we are boycotting Target.
So, my husband fell and broke some fingers last week, he’s in a cast for 8 weeks. He should get disability, but I’m nervous. It’s hard enough being dependent on his income alone, now we are dependent on the government and that scares the hell out of me.
I can hear my mom’s voice reassuring me that things will get better. She always had something positive to say no matter how hard things got, and they usually do get better eventually, if you Think Positive. I’m trying! ❤️🩹🙏
Love you and thank you sweetheart.

Yeah, I feel bad for complaining, I know there are millions of people being discriminated against every day, it’s just the first time it hit me.

Dear Tiffany, sorry to read about your husband’s injury. You know your mom’s message is truthful, but it is so hard when you’re going through it. It is also difficult to be excluded when you are fully qualified. I always see so many images (people/animals/objects) in your beautiful paintings.

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement, my friend! I just have to get more creative, persistent, and again, stay positive about the job thing, but there’s nothing good about doing all the cooking and dishes!! 😂

You’re very welcome my friend. You… more creative! 😁 I understand how frustrating these scenarios can be, and I also believe in you! You’ll get through this. 🙌🏻🦋 Less cooking and dishes sound a great motivator for you! 😅

Oh no, that’s terrible your husband broke some fingers and has to wear a cast for 8 weeks. And I cannot believe Target considers being over 40 as too old! It’s bad enough to be rejected for jobs when you’re over 55 (as my husband and I were when we first moved to the Coachella Valley), but 40? It’s hard to maintain a positive outlook at times like these.

Thanks Jeff, I really can’t believe 40 is the “too old” age especially when I have all the experience and full availability. I’m trying to let that go, I just wish there were more jobs out there, and with all the government layoffs, there’s thousands more people looking for work. Sad and uncertain times for sure.😔

Ageism is so prevalent. I worked in the garment center for years and really, in fashion, it’s even hard when you’re over 30. But Target? I would never have thought it. Sending positive and healing thoughts your way. (K)

I’d go back to Target, or Call their Headquarters, and find out what’s going on. I hope things work out soon and hope your husband’s hand heals quickly. I also understand your concern having to count on the government at this time.

Thanks Gigi, yeah, I’ve been thinking of all the things I’d like to tell them, not nice things at all!😂 We will get by, one way or another, never give up! 😉

I will be thinking of you through this, Tiffany.
One thought: might there be ten people who follow you, and live in your area, who would form a “job club,” keeping their eyes open for employment possibilities?
I am not sure how helpful I could be from the UK, but I could try.

Thank you Geoffrey, that is a creative idea! I do know a lot of other unemployed people, we talk, it’s just there are so few available jobs and it’s getting worse. I’ve got a project I’m working on, fingers crossed it works out! 😉

I hope the project goes well.
I’m glad my idea wasn’t terrible; I thought there may be some extra eyes among your supporters.

I thought it violated federal law to ask those questions. But California is out of touch with reality, so anything is possible. Hope things get better for you soon! I lived in CA for 24 years and know how hard it can be. My daughter and her boyfriend are moving out of CA in October. Hugs & Kisses!

Thanks Dawn, it is illegal, but they pose it as “volunteer” questions and you won’t hear back at all unless you answer the questions. Yes, I’ve been in CA my whole life but I am sick of it all, looking for a new destination!😔
